Telos meaning, and how to find yours

Telos (τέλος) is the Greek word for end, goal or purpose: what a thing is ultimately for. Aristotle used it to explain things by what they are for; a common illustration is that the telos of an acorn is the oak. APSP applies the idea to a life: your telos is the state your personal, financial and social life is built to reach.

Telos in Aristotle

Aristotle explained natural things and human actions partly by their end. In the Nicomachean Ethics, the highest human end is eudaimonia, usually translated as flourishing or living well (see the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy on Aristotle’s ethics). A good life, on this view, is one directed toward its proper end rather than pulled around by whatever comes next.

How to write your telos in one sentence

  1. Describe who you are at your best: how you act, decide and treat people.
  2. Name where your current path leads in 24 months if nothing changes.
  3. Write the life you intend instead, in one sentence a stranger could understand.
  4. Test it against your calendar: does your time match it?

If it reads like fantasy, rebuild it from analysis. A telos should be structural: it has to survive a bad week.

Measure your life against it

A telos only helps if you measure against it. The free life audit rates each domain against where it must be in 24 months for your life to serve its purpose, and the life assessment scores Fulfillment, where purpose lives, alongside the other four areas.

Telos in APSP

Every APSP framework measures the distance between where a part of your life is and what it is for. The philosophy is set out in Vman; the 1-3-7 Sequence, framework 3 of the 21 frameworks, audits whether your vision, execution and completion line up.

Questions about telos

How do you pronounce telos?

TEL-oss, or TEE-loss. Both are common in English.

Is telos the same as ikigai?

No. Ikigai is a Japanese idea of a reason for being. Telos is the Greek idea of an end or purpose. Both point at meaning; APSP uses telos because it can be measured against.
